Senator Daniel Akaka is a strong believer in the power of education, and his belief that proper education can bring young people away from trouble and open their future to brighter prospects became his impetus for joining the education sector.

"When I was ready to go to college, I tried to think which way I was going.  What was on my mind was that I wanted to do something that could help people," Senator Akaka said.  "And so I looked at education as the field that can help young people.  I'm glad I went there, it did work for me and I was able to help hundreds of young people growing up in Hawaii."

Senator Daniel Akaka grew up in a household open to philanthropic opportunities, and this turned out to be his ticket to becoming an effective public servant.  Senator Akaka's parents were instrumental in nurturing his unending capacity to help other people especially the youth.

"In my family, my mom and dad, they nurtured us in that way so that we felt about people.  So we wanted to care about people," he said.

Growing up in a family of eight living in a two bedroom house taught Senator Akaka the value of providence.  He said helping the public could be a source of fulfillment, and that leverage could be applied to reach the thousands in need of assistance.

"There are so many needs out there, and I feel that as you help people, using leverage to help people, that this fulfills your life and makes it better and more meaningful.  For me, this comes down to the spirit of Aloha which embodies all of this."
