"To whom much is given, much is expected."
These words inspired two young students to put together what has become a successful annual event, effectively raising over $57,000 gross for local charities since its inception in 2004.
Punahou high school students, River Kim and Tierney Morikawa, founded Malama Jam now on its third year. Six other students, each with their own area of responsibility, help run the organization.
According to PR Chair, Jackie Chang, being a youth-powered event makes Malama Jam a unique organization. She said that the big message that they try to convey is not only for the organization "to be successful in making a difference but to get the word out that kids can make a difference".
"I guess Malama Jam has been a big way where I've been able to take action on feelings I have of wanting to give back," she added. "And it's nicer to be part of a bigger picture instead of me just making a difference, it's a group of people and we work as a team."
This year's Malama Jam focuses more on the promotion of visual arts through the auction of student and professional art work. However, according to River Kim, the fundraiser will still retain the youth performances that has made it a popular, much-awaited benefit concert.
