Sometimes it is due to necessity and survival that the saying "You can't teach old dogs new tricks" becomes inapplicable, especially in swimming. According to Lori Komer, founder of Leahi Swim School, it is harder to teach adults how to swim than their younger counterparts because of the fear of water they have built up through the years.
To reverse the trend, Leahi Swim School offers training lessons to adults designed to take aquaphobia away from their psyche. The program, which is the brainchild of Lori's son, Ben, specifically addresses the fear factor of learning how to swim.
"My son took this course where he would address the fear first and learning to swim comes naturally after it. So basically everything is done within your complete comfort level," Lori said. "So you never advance for the next activity until you're completely comfortable and sometimes with some of my students that means they're just standing in the pool for fifteen or twenty minutes before they can submerge their shoulders."
"My son was telling me that in his training there was a lady who would only take showers because she could not submerge herself in a bathtub and at the end of the course she was swimming and loving it too," she added.
Every year Lori Komer gives out hundreds of gift certificates as part of her donation to schools and non-profit organizations running auctions and fundraisers. The gift certificates offer free swimming lessons to kids.
According to Komer, involvement in the community is just the right thing to do, whether or not it benefits her business.
