Staying on the positive side of things proved well for owner of Pictures Plus, Kent Untermann. His football career with the Dallas Cowboys in the mid 1980s was cut short after a hamstring injury which would eventually take him out of the sport entirely.
But he used the opportunity to initiate his step into the entrepreneurial world. Untermann started by selling Ford merchandise at the Aloha Stadium weekend swap meet.
He then ventured into the art trade by selling low-end paintings. Eventually, his business began to expand exponentially turning a $5000 football bonus to what is now a $14 million per annum company.
Kent Untermann shares his optimistic outlook to players of the University of Hawaii's football team, giving speeches once in a while about the importance of education underlying a lucrative career in sports.
"I've always tried to channel my efforts in to the UH specifically the football program because that's something that I did. I give speeches once in a while and talk about the importance of education," he said. "If an employee is affiliated with a non-profit organization, we give through them. That way we are helping our employee and helping the community," he added.
In 1997 the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) voted Kent Hawaii's Small Business Exporter of the Year.
