A local music producer pushes forward Hawaiian culture into the global community. Jon de Mello, CEO of The Mountain Apple Company, said that the company helps people focus on the local customs through the promotion, production and organization of Hawaiian music.
"We are trying to promote, produce and organize Hawaiian music, Hawaiian language, hula and cultural events, from our station in the middle of the Pacific, to focus and help people focus at different things. Especially our community and our culture, the Hawaiian culture," de Mello said.
Jon de Mello's dedication in upholding local Hawaiian music is exemplified by his scrupulous and indiscriminate search for talent. He said that a kid on the beach playing music or a garage band of teenagers might be the next big start.
According to De Mello, the company name came from a seemingly Newtonian experience.
"There is an indigenous fruit from Hawaii called the mountain apple, which I had a huge tree in the back of my house, all of a sudden I heard a little plop on the tin roof and it rolled right down the roof and fell into the bushes in front of me," he said. "I thought that was kind of a sign from God and, you know, it had to be Mountain Apple Company. And being an indigenous fruit to the islands made perfect sense to me."
Last year, de Mello helped The Nature Conservancy produce a DVD promoting environmental protection after the organization approached him to produce five EP songs for a CD.
