Involvement in charitable giving is Bill Richardson's way of saying thank you.
A venture capitalist with HMS Hawaii Management Partners, Richardson contracted a kidney disease and has since received a transplant and two artificial hips to alleviate the problem.
Subsequently, he thought of joining the Kidney Foundation to help those who might undergo the same experience as he did.
Another organization that he got involved with was Hospice Hawaii which had put his ill mother under their care.
According to Richardson, he has been affiliated to numerous organizations and spends five to six years on each one, carefully planning his involvement to be able to give his best efforts.
"I tend to do my charitable efforts in a sequential way. So I started with Hospice Hawaii, I went to the Kidney Foundation, then I did UH Foundation then I did HiBeam and now I'm currently involved with the Entrepreneur's Foundation," he said. "But I have to be very careful about my time, because if I'm going to get involved with an organization, I have to give it my best effort."
Richardson expects nothing from his participation but is grateful for the benefits he receives.
"I never go into it thinking that I'll gain connections or I'll gain some benefit for me. It's always that I think that it's a great organization and I want to do as much as I can for my community," he said. "But as with all efforts like that, lots of it comes back to you, and it's very nice to see that. But it's not reason why I think anyone does it."
