In 2002, William Donohoe was diagnosed with Arnold-Chiari malformation (ACM), a brain anomaly, which put him on medical disability as a FedEx employee.
He flew to Florida where he had his operation and stayed with his sons in the state during his recovery. Donohoe's entrepreneurial realizations came as he recuperated from surgery.
"It's always been my dream to start my own business and when I went on medical disability, I made the determination to start my own business," he said.
In January 2005, he discovered the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation program which would eventually fund his dream, The Shipping Shack. On September 9th he saw the birth of his business after months of training at a Hawaii entrepreneurship class under the auspices of Hal Fraser.
With his experience under medical care, William Donohoe advises would-be businesspeople not to put off their goals despite obstacles along the way.
"We get into a daily routine of getting up in the morning and going to work and come home and next thing you know your half of life has gone passed and you're always going to say 'I should have done this'," he said. "If you have a dream go and do it and if you run to any obstacles always look deep inside there…You will find something you can grab a hold of and use it to your advantage. If you look deep enough it's there."
