In 2005, Sony Malaysia held its inaugural "Sony Nature Photography Project", designed to promote environmental stewardship among the general public through photography. Over 2,000 amateur and student photographers joined the contest, which ultimately honored 16 lucky winners with Sony products and cash prizes.
In Russia, Sony CIS held a cleanup event at a national park in Moscow participated by 22 employees. Popular amongst Moscow residents, the park needed the support of volunteers to maintain its appeal and cleanliness.
A total of 485 employees of the Sony Group in Sendai, their families and local residents took part in a project to clean up a municipal road and replant flowers in flowerbeds in the city of Tagajo, Japan. This biannual activity was launched in 2000 and has continued to this day, thanks to a group of regular volunteers composed of both employees and residents. In addition to contributing to local beautification, the activity is an opportunity for children to learn about the environment.
Sony Hawaii Company enacts its own multi-faceted community initiatives by sponsoring various civic and charitable causes such as the Kuakini Foundation, Aloha United Way, Honolulu Symphony, and the grand Sony Open in Hawaii. To date, the Sony Open has generated more than $6 million for local charities with its NGO partner, Friends of Hawaii.
In 2006, Sony announced that it would extend its sponsorship of the golf tourmanent to 2010, guaranteeing that more will benefit from the State's finest sporting event.
