Sony Hawaii was founded in 1968, with Kenji Tayama as the company's foremost president. Through the years, Hawaiian's have come to recognize Sony products as reliable, superior, and of high quality. Product loyalty was established gradually turning the brand into a household name. As a means of reciprocating the support given to them by the community, Sony Hawaii has aspired to be a positive and contributing corporate member of Hawaii's community, sponsoring civic and charitable causes such as the Aloha United Way, the Kuakini Foundation, and the Sony Open, delineating the community bottom line of the company.
One of the golfing world's most prestigious events, the Sony Open in Hawaii unfailingly draws tourists and TV viewers from around the globe helping to boost Hawaii's economy. According to president of Sony Hawaii Company and executive director of Friends for Charities Hawaii, Don Kim, the Sony Open in Hawaii generates more than $1 million per annum, which benefits island-based charities.
"Through the Sony Open, over 140 countries are televising the Sony Open in Hawaii games. So they all can enjoy to see the beautiful scenery of Hawaii," Mr. Kim added. "They cannot feel the weather, but in January and February some of the other countries have snow, and I think they can see it clearly, the oceans and the golfers wearing shorts. So it's good advertising for not only Sony, but Hawaii too."
Sony's corporate social responsibility does not end in the community. In 1990, the company formed the Sony Environmental Conservation Committee whose job is to oversee the implementation and enactment of pro-environment initiatives. 2006 saw the establishment of Green Management 2010, a list of targets which aims to minimize the environmental impact of Sony's business activities, and the overall shift to a globally integrated environmental management system.
